Eating To Fight Wrinkles

When we think about trying to prevent wrinkles, we tend to think of what we put on the outside of our bodies. We think of different creams that contain an assortment of different materials to help prevent wrinkles. We think about sunscreen to help prevent UV rays from causing sun damage. We think about laser and plastic surgery to help erase the tale-telling lines on our face that can give hints as to how old we are. But the best way to fight wrinkles is to right them from the inside out.

What does this mean for you? What ever you put into your mouth is playing a major role in just how youthful your skin appears. Of course if you’re a smoker who eats at a fast food joint every day you should expect your health to be worse, and as a result your skin will appear more dull, dry, and wrinkled. But if you take proper care of your nutrition and feed your body the foods that it needs, you will be well on your way to preventing wrinkles.

Some of the foods that will best prevent wrinkles include:

  • Vegetables, particularly garlic, onions, leeks, asparagus, eggplant, spinach and celery
  • Leafy green vegetables
  • Any vegetable juice with low or no sugar
  • Beans and other legumes
  • Water
  • Tea
  • Fruits, particularly pears, prunes, apples, melons, cherries and grapes, as well as dried fruits
  • Yogurt
  • Cheese
  • Olive oil
  • Olives
  • Nuts
  • Sardines
  • Eggs
  • Any multigrain bread

So why do these foods help prevent wrinkles? Because they are filled with healthy fats (monounsaturated fat), calcium, phosphorus, iron, zinc, magnesium, retinol and vitamin C. Vitamin C is perhaps the single most important nutrient on this list, as it is a power antioxidant that will help neutralize ay free radicals (cancer and age-causing) from damaging your body. These free radicals enjoy corrupting our healthy cells, and can cause the collagen in our skin to break down. This, in turn, causes premature wrinkles.

Vitamin C also contains antioxidants, which again helps neutralize those free radicals. Other nutrients that can be found in these foods are vitamin E and coenzyme Q10, which also contain anti-aging properties.

Retinol, a form of vitamin A, is required for both the growth as well as the reproduction of our skin. Retinol is the key ingredient to us having fresh, youthful skin, which also translates to mean “skin without wrinkles”. If we have a sufficient amount of retinol in our bodies, then we are going a long way in preventing any wrinkles, skin discolorations, roughing of the skin and thing of the skin. You don’t need a whole lot of retinol to reap the benefits of this nutrient; it can be found in a number of animal food products, such as eggs and liver, and many different foods are also being fortified with retinol as we recognize its health benefits for society as a whole.
